OPTIMIZING MALAYSIAN ARCHITECT, ENGINEER AND CONTRACTOR’S (AEC) TEAM PRODUCTIVITY USING MINIMAL COLLABORATIVE TECHNOLOGY

Today global environmental concerns have become a mainstream goal in a build environment. This paradigm shift requires Malaysian AEC to change how they do their work and collaborate with global partners in the future. Globalization has made the Malaysian AEC industry needing to employ collaborative paraphernalia during international partnership project delivery with other respective counterparts in other countries. With the Malaysian Construction Industry Transformation Program 2016-2020 (CITP 2016-2020) to facilitate and redirect the Malaysian construction industry’s future and towards productivity, technology, capabilities, and proficiency. Utilization of technology among AEC professionals’ communication is crucial in leveraging construction activities and implementation progresses. However, multi layers of personality, culture, and human behaviours could alleviate successful communication practices in AEC operating environment.  Therefore, identifying minimal collaborative tools could preliminarily support AEC iterations.

During project delivery dyadic and triadic team communication iteration behaviour could recur to solve complex issues and to consolidate uncertain decisions. Dyadic communication involves two close people who exchange ideas, thoughts, and feelings on a mutual basis (Brown, Paz-Aparicio, & Revilla, 2019); while triadic communication involves three or more people who are familiar and working towards a common objective (Hastings, Hoover, & Musambira, 2005). When non-collocate dyadic and triadic communication culture intervenes during project delivery, decision making is made openly, reciprocally by experienced members formally.

Minimal synchronous collaborative tool such as WhatsApp could give right information at the right time, shorter meeting time, lesser formalization and high confidence level. Speedy consensus decision agreement is highly achieved with lesser bureaucratic procedures and formalization. When information flow is sufficient, project productivity would accelerate and benefit project’s output and productivity. The benefits in implying the dyadic and triadic communication using minimal collaborative tool could be reflected in enhanced professionals’ education curriculum and programs.
