Soultraxx 2024: Building Connections and Resilience

By: Dr. Annisa Ummihusna Abdul Ghani

The Department of Architecture at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) successfully organized the annual Soultraxx 2024 Start-up Camp at Kompleks MSN Saujana, Asahan, Melaka. This program, first introduced in 2008, aims to welcome new students while fostering connections with senior students and lecturers. The name Soultraxx reflects the program’s purpose of discovering and uniting new souls in the field of architecture.

A Meaningful Start

Soultraxx is an important tradition for architecture students at UPM. It helps participants prepare for the challenges of their studies and future careers as resilient architects. The program also promotes teamwork, environmental awareness, and sensitivity to societal needs. By the end of the camp, students gain valuable lessons in collaboration, problem-solving, and dynamic thinking, which are essential for contributing to the nation’s development through architecture.

Activities That Inspire

The camp began with a Nature Walk, where participants hiked along a trail to Air Terjun Asahan, located at the base of Gunung Ledang. This was followed by an adventurous flying fox challenge at Kompleks MSN Saujana Asahan, managed by Selat Group. One of the highlights was the Kenduri Sekampung activity. Guided by the Orang Asli communities of Tanah Gembur and Sungai Mering, participants learned traditional cooking techniques using basic materials like bamboo and firewood. This experience provided students with a unique insight into rural life and cultural traditions. In the evening, participants showcased their creativity and teamwork during group performances, which brought energy and fun to the program.

Strengthening Bonds

The next day, the Explore Race activity tested participants’ teamwork and problem-solving skills. Teams worked together to complete various challenges, strengthening their connections and building camaraderie. The camp concluded with a closing ceremony, where outstanding teams were recognized and awarded for their efforts throughout the program.

A Tradition That Lives On

Soultraxx continues to be a meaningful event that shapes the values and skills of UPM’s architecture students. By uniting students and lecturers in a supportive and challenging environment, this program ensures that participants are better prepared to face the journey ahead in their architectural education and beyond.
