INFUSING CSR IN AN ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO PROJECT: A Cattery for SPCA

Dr Roslina Sharif

Department of Architecture

Studio 1 imbued the element of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in the studio project by collaborating with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA Selangor). The project was sponsored by SPCA through the sales of SPCA notebooks and calendars by the students themselves. The final project of the semester centred on the manipulation and transformation of 3D elements, design principles and its application in building a real scale structure suitable for the learning outcome of the semester. Field trip to SPCA was done for the students to immerse themselves in the actually ambiance of an animal shelter. Looking at the natural and man-made habitat of the felines gave them the ideation necessary and required for the project. The Cattery project’s main objective is to construct a play-structure for the felines. The group had a great experiential learning activity whilst meeting the needs of a real client. The marketing manager of SPCA Ms Helen joined the studio crit sessions in the faculty to provide insightful feedback to the students’ design. Not only meeting the specified outcomes, the project was also successful in instilling the sense of social responsibility to the students while enhancing their soft skills in communication and collaboration with the real client. The Cattery project was selected as the main exhibit in the first PAM-student exhibition held in the PAM Centre in Bangsar.
