COGnitii is envisioned as a digital repository chronicling the evolution of conceptual design philosophies developed through the ARC4902 Topical Studies course. Closely aligned with the ARC3016 Architectural Design Studio, these philosophies emerge in tandem with student projects that focus on the spatial and socio-cultural dynamics of selected townships.
In recent semesters, the Department of Architecture has challenged the ARC4902 course coordinators to explore ways of embedding humaneness into the design process—encouraging students to reflect on both their own identities and those of the communities they engage with. This approach necessitates an intrinsic motivation among students to connect meaningfully with their environments, interpreting lived experiences and perceptual encounters as the basis for thoughtful architectural inquiry.
The artefacts curated within this publication serve as cognitive imprints—each connotation capturing a distinct layer of understanding, empathy, and interpretation. Collectively, these cognitions form a conceptual foundation that informs and inspires the architectural representations produced in the design studio.
This initiative owes its origin to Prof. Ts. Dr. Rahinah Ibrahim, whose vision and leadership gave shape to the concept of COGnitii. We also extend our sincere appreciation to her successor, Dr. Nor Azlina Abu Bakar, for her commitment to sustaining this annual publication of exemplary student works.
It is our hope that COGnitii will continue to grow, serving as both a reflection of evolving architectural thought and a legacy of the ARC4902 course for generations of students to come.
