MENARA WARISAN BUDI PUTRA, UPM

Introduction

On 20th September 2006, in conjunction with Universiti Putra Malaysia's 75th Anniversary, a launching ceremony of the Warisan Budi Putra Clock Tower was graced by His Excellency DYMM Tuanku Canselor UPM. The objective of this clock tower building is to acknowledge contributions by the campus community, alumni, and friends of UPM to the university. The initiative to build the Warisan Budi Putra UPM was championed by UPM Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dato. Dr Mohd Roslan bin Sulaiman himself.

The concept and design of the Menara Warisan Budi were done by the Faculty of Design & Architecture team, led by Associate Prof Suhardi Maulan, Dr Hassan Alli, Wan Mazlan Wan Hamat and Ar. Nik Fazlysham Nik Mat. The proposed location of this landmark building is within proximity to the Chancellory Building and Dewan Besar UPM, where the UPM graduation ceremony takes place. This strategic location allows the building to be part of UPM’s beautiful moments, particularly during convocation.

Design Concept

The Menara Warisan Budi design took inspiration from the spirit of togetherness between the university and alumni by highlighting the love for our tagline Berilmu, Berbakti.

The design concept is adapted from the unique UPM logo. It will become a new landmark exclusive to UPM and a proud symbol for its staff, students and alumni. This one of its kind design will be symbolic of the culture of excellence and represent an appreciation of time, creating a tremendous visual impact on the UPM main campus.

The square clock tower is four by four meters in dimension, and the primary structural system uses metal for columns and beams. Due to budget limitations, the tower height was reduced from 37.0 M to 21.0 M from the original scheme.

The open deck on the ground floor is covered by open pergola roofing material and supported by lightweight tree canopy structures with climbing plants on top, protecting the open platform from direct sunlight. At the same time, visitors still can visually sight the interactive digital led display and the UPM logos from the open platform below.

The wall uses a perforated metal panel to give a unique lighting effect, especially at night. In addition, the Led digital display/clock is installed on one front side facing the Dewan Besar. The interactive display also enables visitors to interact with the content. For example, during a gathering or festival, the digital-led screen can display the events while it is happening.

We use the green wall feature on the wall using small plants. We also plant climbing trees that will grow through the lightweight steel structure to the canopy pergola that shade the platform below.

The clock tower has an open theatre that can be used for outdoor learning activities or events, equipped with seating benches, pavers and lovely landscaping surrounding the area.

Visitors can see signage showcasing donor names from the clock tower entrance uniquely displayed along the wall. It is an honour to design the concept and identity of the Warisan Budi Putra Clock Tower, and we would like to thank all donors for their contributions to making this meaningful project a reality.
