EVENT-BASED PROJECTS – DESIGN vs TIME, COST AND QUALITY

Dr. Sarah Abdulkareem Salih

At our faculty “FRSB,” we have always strived to provide significant insight into the local unique architectural masterpieces. As part of our lecture series at the Department of Architecture and Faculty of Design and Architecture (FRSB), we seek to highlight the role of large-scale facilities and event-based projects due to their significant role in the economy and tourism of the country in providing a sense of identity and continuity. Topics related to event-based projects are vital for enhancing our economy, culture, and identity, as they could represent tourist economic focal points. Therefore, to learn more about event-based projects, we invited Ar. Khairil Anwar Halim (Architect) and Ms. Nonee Hartinee (Senior Electrical Engineer) will talk more about the idea of event-based projects focusing on sports facilities in Malaysia designed and managed by Ar. Khairil and his team.

The interesting talk entitled "Event-Based  Projects - Design VS Time, Cost And Quality" was given as a part of our regular activities at the Faculty on 25 April 2024 at Dewan Reka Bentuk FRSB. Dr. Sarah Abdulkareem Salih from the Department of Architecture, UPM, coordinated the event by inviting Ar. Khairil and his team, and the lecture was attended by some of our postgraduate and Bachelor students.

Ar. Khairil Anwar is a professional architect. He obtained his professional architectural registration in 1995 and, a year later, set up KAC Architect. In 2014, Ar. Khairil Anwar was involved in projects for the SEA GAMES 2017 KUALA LUMPUR, where he monitored and project-managed 34 stadiums in the country. Ms. Nonee Hartini Hassan is an Associate and Senior Electrical Engineer working with HS M&E Consult Sdn Bhd. She is involved in various types of projects, from residential, commercial, institutional and mixed developments.

In this lecture, Ar Khairil and Ms. Nonee highlighted the role of event-based projects, which are projects that are shaped and created due to the requirement of an event that will take place in the near future. These projects are unique as they are usually linked to a completion time period that cannot be revised or modified, i.e., an opening ceremony, an official launch, etc. It is frequently associated with sports festivals, conferences, or exhibitions. Due to their scale and functionality, these projects significantly on the national economy and play a critical role in tourism. In this lecture, Ar Khairil discussed how while running a project, architects commonly explore design aspects while balancing traditional issues such as time, cost, and quality. However, event-based projects remain a challenge and need to be considered and well-absorbed.
