UNIVERSITY STUDY TRIP TO BANGKOK: A 4-DAY EXPLORATION OF CULTURE AND ARCHITECTURE

BANGKOK, 6 – 9 May 2024 – The students from the Master of Architecture program went on a four days of university study trip to Bangkok, Thailand, focusing on cultural immersion and architectural exploration. The trip provided valuable insights into Thai architecture, culture, and daily life. Students gained a deeper understanding of architectural education and practice in Thailand, explored diverse urban spaces, and experienced the rich cultural tapestry of Bangkok. This study trip serves as a testament to the power of travel in broadening perspectives, fostering cultural appreciation, and inspiring future architectural endeavors.

Day 1:

• Explored Sukhumvit, a bustling commercial area, experiencing local morning markets and vibrant street life.
• Conducted an urban exploration of Siam Square, comparing pedestrian-friendliness and shop diversity to Kuala Lumpur's Pavilion Bukit Bintang to TRX.

Day 2:

• Visited Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University (SSRU), a relatively new university with a focus on architecture.
• Learned about SSRU's history, including its past as a royal garden.
• Received a presentation on the Thai architecture program and studio experience.
• Toured the university museum, a former royal mansion with exquisite craftsmanship.
• Walked to Phra Sumen Fort, enjoying the Khao San Road area.
• Took a boat ride to the Grand Palace, admiring its beauty despite coronation day restrictions.
• Visited The Commons Saladaeng, a real-life project previously studied in class.

Day 3:

• Visited A49, a renowned architecture firm, and met the headmaster, Lek- Prabhakorn Vadanyakul.
• Attended a presentation on the firm's design process, including the award-winning Vella Sindhorn Village project, highlighting the integration of luxury and green spaces.
• Toured the A49 office, noting its modern design, departmental spaces, and employee library.
• Visited a project by Klein Dytham Architecture within the Central Embassy Complex, showcasing a multi-functional space for dining, working, shopping, and co-working.
• Explored Icon Siam, a luxurious mall with stunning architecture, high-end brands, and a water show.
• Walked back to the hotel, encountering a vibrant market and Soi Cowboy for a glimpse into Bangkok's nightlife.

Day 4:

• Visited Soi Phetchaburi, a bustling market for last-minute souvenir shopping.
• Explored Big C, a local supermarket chain, experiencing everyday Thai life and purchasing unique food items.
• Departed for the airport, reflecting on the transformative experience of the trip.
