From Ground to Sky and Sea: Coastal Landscape Exploration in Tanjung Leman & Mersing Township

 Gs.Dr.Junainah Abu Kasim

A field visit to Tanjung Leman, Mersing, was conducted from October 23 to 26, 2025, as part of the Year 3 Site Planning Studio, Bachelor of Landscape Architecture. The visit aimed to provide experiential learning in site assessment, coastal environment analysis, spatial observation, and tourism-related planning considerations.

As part of the learning exposure, students also spent two hours sketching in Bandar Mersing to study urban character, coastal township patterns, and visual qualities of the public

realm. In addition, the group visited Majlis Daerah Mersing and met with officers from Jabatan Perancangan Pembangunan dan Landskap for a briefing and information-sharing session related to local development strategies, municipal planning issues, and coastal management approaches.

To complement on-ground observation, drone aerial observation was conducted to capture a comprehensive visual understanding of the site, particularly areas that were not easily visible or accessible from ground level. This helped students interpret site scale, landscape structure, vegetation patterns, and coastal interface zones more effectively.

Students carried out a comprehensive site inventory and analysis, including physical, environmental, and socio-behavioural components. Key activities included user movement mapping, sketch documentation, PESTEL analysis, and observation of coastal vegetation.

This field exposure allows students to translate theoretical understanding into real-world planning practice and forms an essential foundation for subsequent masterplan development and design proposals. The visit aligns with FRSB’s commitment to preparing graduates with strong analytical competencies, critical thinking, and professional readiness in landscape architectural planning.
