Urban Regeneration Project in Banglamphu, Rattanakosin, Bangkok

An urban regeneration project was conducted in Bangkok Thailand as a collaboration between the Master of Tropical Urban Design (MTUD) students from Faculty of Design and Architecture, UPM, Serdang and Master of Architecture students from Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University (SSRU), Bangkok. The two student groups conducted an urban analysis and synthesis of an urban precinct in Banglamphu part of the historic district of Rattanakosin in Bangkok.
The urban analysis included the following:
Analysis of the precinct in terms of legibility, permeability, and visual analysis
Identifying existing physical and visual connectivity to surrounding areas
Identifying existing activities and function
The urban synthesis included the following:
A concept for the precinct targeting the visual and physical connectivity, building typology, streets and public spaces, functions, and activities
Ensuring that all design proposals address the impacts of climate change and future pandemics
The outcomes of the project ensured that the existing character, sense of place and identity of Banglamphu are fully retained.
