Introduction
Industrial design is a field that focuses on art, design and user’s touch in the process of engineering and manufacturing. It is a process of designing new products that derives from creative problem solving and adding technology discoveries to make the product more appealing, functioning better, ease its use and improving the environment and ecosystem quality. At the Universiti Putra Malaysia, a Industrial Design program was created and offered to develop professional Industrial Designers, profound knowledge in design, skilled, critical thinkers in solving design problems, enhance creativity and empower innovation and, capable of planning and managing industrial design projects effectively.
The Industrial Design Department
The Department of Industrial Design, Faculty of Design & Architecture, Universiti Putra Malaysia was established in 2002 and the first student intake of the bachelor program was at the First Semester of 2002/2003 session. To date, the program has produced about 370 professional graduates who, particularly, meet the needs of national talent in the field of Industrial Design and, generally, as an important manpower that supports manufacturing industry.
Graduates from this department are mostly employed in public and private sectors with various specializations, such as skilled manpower especially on concept design, technical and computer aided design (CAD) work, design advisers, design management and consultancy, design research and development, business and entrepreneurship, education and more.

Graduate Program
The Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design) program is a four-year program which requires a minimum of 121 credit hours to complete. The bachelor’s program has a balance approach on design, technical skills, media and graphics. At the 6th semester, the students will go through internship and exposed to real industrial design job, in industries from four major manufacturing clusters: product, furniture, transport and packaging.
For Master’s and PhD program, students are supervised by expert staff of the department majoring both in Industrial Design and Graphic & Multimedia. Students are given opportunity to explore and develop new knowledge on industrial and media design and able to produce highimpact publications, Industrial Design patent, potentially commercialized products and opportunity to participate in design competition on national level as well as international.
