Exploring parallels between fashion and building, first year architecture students were tasked to create a wearable as a culmination of their beginning design studio. While sharing the same purpose of providing the body with shelter and protection, both creative practices create space and volume from two-dimensional design elements.
Design investigations in the first semester is totally analog with a heavy emphasis on making as a mean by which ideas are made visible. Through decisions related to size, shape, material and context, a design output takes a specific and perceivable form. Students learn to create relationships between elements, building an understanding of the connection between form and the meanings they support. This is an important goal of beginning design education. Despite the current situation of being confined at home, in absence of peer-learning in particular, it is encouraging to see what the students came up with.
