MASTER OF SCIENCE (BY RESEARCH)

          

 

 

INTRODUCTION

 

Faculty of Design and Architecture conducts Master of Science programs (by research) in several field of studies offered full time and part time. The program took between 1 to 3 years to graduate.

Master of Science (by research) students will be supervised by a supervisory committee comprising experts in the field of study chosen by students. Faculty of Design and Architecture has many academic staff with PhD qualifications and experience in supervising Master's students. The Faculty also has its own library shared with Faculty of Engineering (Engineering and Architecture Library). Universiti Putra Malaysia also offers limited financial assistance under the supervision of the School of Graduate Studies, UPM.

Master of Science Graduates have career opportunities in educational institutions such as polytechnics, government and private colleges as well as in research institutions. Most graduates continue their studies to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). 

The fields of study offered in the Master of Science programme are as follows:

  • Master of Science (Landscape Studies)
  • Master of Science (Architectural Studies)
  • Master of Science (Urban Planning and Design)
  • Master of Science (Industrial Design Studies)
  • Master of Science (Integrated Design Studies)

 

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

 

Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree in a related field with CGPA as below to apply for the Master of Science Program (by research).

  • CGPA 2.750 or;
  • CGPA 2.500 – CGPA 2.749 + 3 years of working experience or;
  • CGPA below 2.500 + 5 years of working experience

 

All international candidates who have graduated with a bachelor's degree in which English is not a medium of study, must fulfil the English language requirements set by the School of Graduate Studies, University Putra Malaysia. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

 

COURSEWORK

Students are required to register for 6 credits of coursework as follows:

  • 1 compulsory course (research method)- 3 credits
  • 1 elective course- 3 credits

(International students are required to register for malay language course and also need to fulfil English requirements during the beginning of the studies.)

SEMINAR RESEARCH PROPOSAL

Student must pass SPS5903 (Seminar Research Proposal) at the beginning of their studies. Student will have to present their research proposal through this course which will be evaluate by assigned assessors. Students are only allowed to continue their research to the next level after passing SPS5903 (Seminar Research Proposal).

THESIS

The student may proceeds to continue with his/her data collection, data analysis and thesis writing.

VIVA VOCE

After thesis submission, the student is required to attend a viva-voce to orally defend his/her thesis. The assessment at the viva voce stage involves evaluation of the student’s knowledge and ability to complete his/her research study to the satisfaction of the examiners.
